Bollywood Cinema above the cinematic experience
On last
Sunday I was watching a beautiful documentary on Mathematics on you tube,
suddenly one pop up was there for suggestion. When I clicked on suggestion, I
was navigated to the trailer of movie “Shakuntala Devi” with Vidya Balan as lead
artist. During the year, we had movies like Super 30, URI, Mangalyan having
teachers, scientist, and soldiers as the central theme of movies. Being a
professor, it feels really good to watch the story of real heroes on screen. Suddenly
one question pops up in my mind that do we have any movies which are also good
for learning finance? If we search for the same on internet we will get a long
list of movies but most of them are from Hollywood. Don’t we have a single
movie on economist or accountants or subjects covering the financial aspects? In
this blog, I am going to discuss about the Bollywood movies having the finance
or financial education as a part of story plot. Let’s look at the Old Bollywood
movies having noteworthy subject of livelihood i.e. money and finance as the
central theme.
Shree
420 (1955)
Shree 420 is
widely known as one of the best cinemas having the lead roles of Raj Kapoor and
Nargis. All generations are in tune with melodious songs till today. One need to
understand that Shree 420 also highlights the betrayal of common man by ponzi
schemes like “House in Rs.100”. Shree 420 educates us about the difference
between the normal return, abnormal return and grid. Even after 65 years of its
release, there are much news about the financial frauds and their victims
resulting into the urge of spreading financial literacy among the common man.
Ghar
Ghar ki Kahani (1970)
We always
anticipate our parents as a super couple and keep our expectations on high
side. Even most of the Indian parents provide everything as per their financial
capacity. Due to affordability issues sometimes they also fail, and then parents
always face the round of questions from kids for not getting the particular
demanded thing. Ghar Ghar ki Kahani
starts with the same arguments between kids and their parents but ends with
educating the kids about Budget, budgetary control and team spirit.
Manjhil
(1979)
May be you
are not aware of this movie but I am sure, you all love “Rim Jhim Gire Savan”
the divine song from this movie. This movie is kind of 3 hours crash course for
the start-up entrepreneurs. It underlines the struggle of new businessman, his
fight against the system and perseverance for making his business successful.
I am fond of movies as I believe this is the
strong medium of education for creating long lasting audio and visual memory. Even
scenes with short length from any movie can give you the reason to lead the
life. Mother India is known for showing & respecting the strength of the
Indian womanhood. I remember one scene from the same movie featuring
Sunil Dutt and his childhood friend. He was shown as an illiterate person and
having trouble to understand the Loan – interest (loan recovery) system imposed
by money lender. Her childhood friend came to rescue by explaining the whole
concept in very simple language and using the most available resource i.e.
stones. I guess that was a very innovative way to show learning and teaching in
the simplified manner with the help of available material rather than looking
for what cannot be available or affordable.
